Tooth extractions

When a tooth may need removal

An extraction may be recommended when a tooth cannot be predictably restored, has severe supporting-tissue damage, or needs removal as part of another treatment plan. Your dentist will assess the tooth and discuss appropriate alternatives.

Preparing for treatment

Share your medical history and medications with your dentist. The approach depends on the tooth and its position; some extractions require surgical care or referral. Local anesthesia is commonly used, and the dentist will explain comfort measures and what to expect.

Healing and next steps

Follow the individualized instructions provided after treatment, including how to protect the healing area and when to seek help. If replacement of the tooth is appropriate, discuss options such as a bridge, implant, or removable denture with your dentist.
